Rapid prototyping: toys to life
Project: ACTION FIGURES TO ACTION GAME
Role: DevelopeR/Designer
Platforms: IPAD / APPLETV / MAC
TECHNOLOGIES: Unity, Mac os, IOS
FEATURED API'S: OBJECT CAPTURE API
This personal project started because my 3 year old son is obsessed with my NECA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie figures (on a shelf behind my work desk). He would be way too destructive to play with them, but I wanted to come up with ways that he might be able to interact with all of "daddy's toys".
The first step is doing some quick photogrammetry of each action figure. To do this, I used the macOS Object Capture API and then imported and rigged the models in Blender. I do some minor texture cleanup in Photoshop and then on to Unity where I did a little keyframe animation, some procedural animation and heavily apply motion capture data.
The final step is some basic game design, coding in C# and then finally building out to the various platforms Unity supports and seeing what he responds to. Tested platforms included iOS, iPadOS, macOS and tvOS.
