Experiments: google Maps + Unity
Project: Paternity leave fun with Unity and Google Maps
Role: DevelopeR
Platforms: Mac/PC, iOS
TECHNOLOGIES: Unity, ios ARKit, Google Maps
FEATURED API'S: google maps for unity sdk
After pokemon go changed the world of geo-based entertainment, I've been closely following the various sdks and api open to developers. while we had generally been limited to various open source and public options, google very recently had released their google maps SDK for Unity. I decided to take it for a spin by making several rapid prototypes.
I created three categories of protoypes: Game, AR and Vr.
- For game, I used the new Unity input system to easily configure a traditional game controller to navigate endless, live geo-driven maps
- for AR, I used iOS ARKit (via Unity) to create some experiences using both traditional marker-based AR and also planar detection AR
- For VR, I used both Unity's native XR framework for basic VR (simple look and motion controls) and also Oculus' apI for hand navigation and Hand controls.
The apps were built using a variety of custom code (modifying colors and physics as each experiment required)
