McDonald’s began exploring Augmented Reality as a way to add value to customers' experiences: for adults, this meant providing nutrition information from packaging, and for children, providing entertainment.
Two prototype projects were commissioned. The first was to prove whether or not existing McDonald’s packaging could be used as Augmented Reality markers, and whether multiple items could be detected at once (providing a “scan once” approach to calculating a meal's calories).
The second prototype was entertainment focused, based on a new character: Ferris and his pet goat. For this, we were asked to prove whether a Happy Meal box could serve as a functional marker and a starting point for interactive children’s entertainment.
