Kids Day 2015
Role: Designer, Developer
Platform: Mobile (iOS)
Technologies: Unity, Xcode
As the popularity of our Kids Day interactive events grew years after year, I decided we needed a large scale social experience that could service as many kids, and ages, as possible. Since the 2015 theme was going to be “Superheroes”, I decided to pursue a “toys to life” idea - with the kids contributing to a growing animated world of hand-colored superheroes and buildings.
Templates were generated for both the superhero texture and the building texture. Kids could take this templates and design whatever they life - using crayons, markers, stickers, glitter, etc. A native iOS app was built to take the photos and isolate the colored portions. For the buildings, sections of the image were randomly enhanced and repeated - to best generate a city of variable sized structures. A 3D character matching the superhero template was designed and given a skeleton. From the isolated colored content, a texture was built to map onto this animated character.
An animated 3D city was designed in Unity that revolved around an ever growing spoke of user generated buildings. As new superheroes were scanned, they would receive an “introduction” scene” and then move to interact with the world. Additionally, the camera would jump between several dynamic scenes of heroes flying, fighting, dancing and walking. Through the course of the four hour "Kids Day", the world grew to contains dozens of buildings and 100+ individual crayon heroes.
